Kandinsky ha trascorso quasi sei mesi preparandosi a creare questo dipinto , inizialmente intendo il lavoro per evocare un'inondazione , battesimo , distruzione e rinascita allo stesso tempo . Ha prima delineato il lavoro su un pannello di legno di grandi dimensioni , ma presto sperimentò un blocco artistico , e si ritrovò incapace di dipingere . gabrielle munter , il suo assistente al momento , gli disse che era bloccato , e aveva bisogno di liberarsi dalle sue trappole intellettuali che circondavano il dipinto . Gli suggerì di ripetere semplicemente la parola “ uberflut , ” senso “ flood” o “ diluvio , ” concentrandosi sul suono della parola piuttosto che sul suo significato , liberando la sua mente dal blocco artistico e concentrandosi solo sulla musica della parola . Kandinsky si mise al lavoro , e completato il dipinto in tre giorni , nel frattempo ripetendo la parola come un mantra .
